About the University Court

The University Court is the governing body of the University of Aberdeen and sits at the heart of the institution’s leadership, stewardship, and public accountability. Operating within Scotland’s statutory governance framework, Court has corporate and legal responsibility for the University and plays a central role in safeguarding its long‑term sustainability, academic mission, and civic purpose.

Court provides strategic leadership and oversight, ensuring that the University’s mission, objectives, and performance are aligned with its values, charitable responsibilities and obligations to students, staff, wider society and the Northeast of Scotland. It holds collective responsibility for strategy, financial sustainability, risk, and institutional performance, and for ensuring that the University is governed with integrity, transparency, and effectiveness.

Working in partnership with the Rector, Principal, and Senatus Academicus, the Court provides constructive challenge and assurance while maintaining a clear distinction between governance and executive management. Through this stewardship role, Court ensures that the University is well led, well governed and positioned to thrive in a rapidly changing higher education landscape.
